The Shakespeare Festival Ashland Oregon has entertained audiences since 1935. During this time, it has completed the entirety of Shakespeare’s cannon three times. The Festival offers both Shakespeare and other classic plays each season that typically begins in February, runs through October, and averages almost 400,000 in total audience attendance. In addition, since the year 2000, the festival also presents at least one new work each season.

Plays for Ashland Shakespeare are presented on one of three stages. During the warmer months, the Elizabethan Stage in Allen Pavilion will present three plays. Throughout the season, the Angus Bowmer and New Theater are also open, with five plays presented in the Bowmer and three in the New Theater. Before playtime, a free show, called the Green Show is presented on a outdoor stage.

OSF has won many awards through the years as a world-renowned theater and acting troupe. It has an excellent costume set, and recently, costumes from OSF were used on Saturday Night Live. Prop designers make creative use of recycled materials and have been known to create sheep from old coiled telephone headset cords or even from tube socks.

Currently, OSF presents close to 800 performances in their three theaters each year. Matinee as well as evening performances allow visitors to see three to four plays in two days. Theaters are dark on Mondays, so out of town visitors will want to plan accordingly.

Like a smaller version of the Oscar’s, filmmakers are honored with juried awards, audience favorite awards, and the Lifetime Achievement Award.  Previous Lifetime Award honorees have included documentarian Albert Maysles, and cinematographer Gerald Hirschfeld.

One of the main aims of the Ashland Independent Film Festival is to promote independent film-making by bringing together promising talent with the business side of the industry. Festival planners work tirelessly year-round to promote film-making in Oregon and to raise the profiles of local film-making talent in the region.

While small by film festival standards, the film festival is one of the premier social events each year in Ashland, a charming town of 20,000 close to the southern Oregon border.  The other big event is the Oregon Shakespeare Festival, which takes place in February each year.   Ashland’s funky cafes, coffee shops and clubs come alive during Festival weeks with impromptu gatherings and rendezvous’, helping emerging talent to make important connections with industry insiders.

Ticket information

Tickets to the Eleventh Annual Ashland Independent Film Festival go on sale to members of the Oregon Film Society on March 20. Ticket sales to the general public begin on March 25.   General admission tickets to individual films are $12, while member passes start at $60. Volunteering

While festival ticket prices are extremely reasonable, indie film fans hit hard by the recession can earn free movie passes and festival swag by volunteering to help at festival events.  Volunteers are needed for multiple shifts each day of the festival in a variety of roles. The more hours you volunteer the more passes you receive. To volunteer, please submit a volunteer application on the festival website.

Getting there

Ashland is in southern Oregon, 285 miles south of Portland and 350 miles north of San Francisco. The closest airport is the Rogue Valley International-Medford Airport in Medford, Oregon, about 12 miles from Ashland. Shuttle buses are available to take visitors from the Medford Airport to downtown Ashland.

Peace Mountain- Hence the name, each of the many large windows of this suite look out at the mountains. The large picture window prominently in front looks out at the Cascades and the window to the left looks at Grizzly Peak our famous peak that was known for grizzlies back in the day and that burned in 2002. The adjoining room views same and of the fir covered Siskiyou’s, even the spacious shower has a mountain view to enjoy!

This lovely spacious suite is located upstairs and on the way up you can’t help to notice the Craftsman stair case sweeping you to this heavenly space with the Maxwell Parish cloud painted ceiling and an amazing stuffed peacock prominently looking over its shoulder at a Shakespearean Antique robe displayed on the wall in royal plums and gems that King Richard wore. A Maxwell Parish print and Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet print flank the beautiful French antique side board with its intricately carved scrolls. The leopard next to the stair rail as if to guard the peacock tail sweeping the floor from its perch.

The room door open to the light and bright space and you feel a big sigh of relaxation. A calm cloak wraps around you with the soft sage walls, warm wood floors and cove ceilings. The royal plum drapery frames the lace laden large craftsman windows and then the red brick tones of the stately rugs. It feels peaceful and at home noticing the luxurious throws and accent pillows and the large tapestry over the kind poster bed.
Turning the corner through the adjoining room where light again accents the artwork and mask collection. Yet another room focal point the large luxurious claw-foot soaking tub and I spontaneously imagine an aromatherapy bubble bath! All the luxuries we enjoy at home and some say even better than home due to its eclectic decor and historic charm and character of the ol’ house. The journal at the bedside has some sweet comments one woman wrote that ” there is just something about this bed” magic is here. I definitely felt this house speak to me while renovating it. It has through the years taken on a personality and it will speak to you if you tune in and listen …at first a whisper of history then a whisper of family and time before…or did you get a whisper in dream time?

Pictures are worth a thousand words and they best describe this suites animal print theme. Done tastefully through each room first by noticing the fully upholstered tiger striped chair and in the next room echoed on the claw foot tub – yes tiger stripes painted on the sides of the tub. Then accents of leopard in the pillows and the animal striped throw pull it all together in this cozy room.

This room actually used to be the exterior sleeping porch hence the exterior siding and exterior window inside the room looking out to the stair hall. The suites has 2 rooms with a door between and each space has its own entry so its great for a couple and a single or a couple and a few small kids.

Besides the leopard greeting you at the door at the top of the stairs and tiger accents the eclectic art and artifacts seem to have a whimsical twist. The Shakespeare print seems to anchor the room in romance as well as the soft bird prints above the bed. The crystal lamps, the wrought iron antique floral chandelier contrasting an original modern painting on wood with a 9 feather leather artifact as its top frame accent makes for an interesting room indeed.
